Foireann iontach, Flipeadóirí Longfoirt Round 2 senior county championship took off in Maguire Park last Sunday when Flipeadóirí Longfoirt met old rivals Emmet Óg on a wet rainy day for a really well contested game. This was a key match for Slashers and demanded intensity to eventually win 2-8 to 11pts.. Slashers opened well with a long range point from Peter Foy. This was the start that was required and soon after Slashers found the net through Trevor Clendenning after a piercing run through Emmet Óg defence. Colin Smith pointed from a free which was followed by a beauty from play again by Trevor Clendenning. Michael Brady was rampant in the full forward line breaking down good ball creating chances for on-running forwards. At this point Rúairí Clarke was working tirelessly and creating space while Paul Kelly was always a threat and tracked back to disrupt Killoe attacks. Martin Tarmey was working hard to find breaks in the tough conditions and Mark Diffley picking up lots of loose ball. Midfield was being held by Trojan Niall Mulligan who distributed very well assisted by Mark Diffley and an irrepressible Michael Brady. The backs came into their own in the 2nd half when Killoe started to pick off points. Barry Gilleran, Peter Brady and Dermot Brady orchestrated the backs. Garret Ghee had one of his finest days in a Slashers jersey where he was never found wanting and showed all his experience. Seán Clarke intercepted all over the back line and is really an important Slashers coming senior player. Colm Farrell kept another clean sheet and is growing in the role as the Flipeadóirí Longfoirt keeper. Darren Flaherty ran on with Conor Clarke and Niall Kelly to revive Slashers tiring legs. Niall Kelly was on hand at the right time to strike the killer blow as the game headed for the final whistle – right man, right place. Courage and pride was the hallmark of this Slashers performance on a day when it was required to light up the championship for the club. Seasoned players like all the Brady’s, Barry Gilleran, Garret Ghee, Niall Mulligan, Colin Smith and Trevor Clendenning were rock solid. These and the fresher faces were what made this victory.
