Connacht Minor Football League Win over Roscommon

Longford 1-13  1-11 Roscommon

Longford minors overcame their neighbours Roscommon for the 1st time since they returned to the Connaught league in 2010 in the brought forward round 5 game played in Clonbonny on Sunday last. On their 3rd successive week end at the Rathcline club grounds , Longford showing 5 changes to the side which won the Leinster league final made the brighter start with Shane Kenny pointing 2 early frees . Roscommon struck back hitting the post twice before going into a 1 point lead by the 12th minute. Longford hit back through Jayson Matthews and Nigel Rabbitte to go into a 1 point lead before a slip by a Longford defender help Roscommon score their goal after 22 minutes . 2 more points followed before Jayson Matthews steadied things to leave Longford trailing 0-06 to 1-07 down at half time.
Longford made a couple of positional changes and 2 substitutions in order to try and rectify problems especially with the kick outs and once again started the half brightly , outscoring the Rossies 3 points to 1 in the first 10 mins. David Shannon was forced into a fine save at the expense of a 45 as a Roscommon player was allowed to run unimpeded to fire at goals. 2 more Roscommon points followed to stretch the lead again to 4 before the Roscommon goalie brought off a fine save the rebound was knocked over the  bar by Matthews . With 10 mins to go the Rossies still holding  the advantage by the goal Shane Kenny ran through the heart of the defence to fire beyond the keeper to level the game . From being second to most balls , Longford were now in command and late points from Mc Cabe and Kenny saw them win on a final score of 1-13 to 1-11.
They now travel to Tuam Stadium next Saturday to take on Galway in their round 1 fixture . Throw in time for noon .
