Foireann Flipeadóirí Longfoirt 2015

Foireann Flipeadóirí Longfoirt In ideal conditions both Slashers and St Mary’s gave a very enjoyable performance in the ACL league at Michael Fay Park on Friday evening last. The game was a point scoring feast with both sides scoring some excellent points in a "nip n tuck" encounter, where Granard led at the break and Slashers led at full time. In many ways the goal scored by Trevor Clendenning  early in the 1st half turned out to be decisive allowing Slashers to finish the game with one point to spare. At half time Granard held the advantage being 1pt ahead. An early good start by Slashers was the foundation for the victory. Shane Rodgers, Garret Ghee and Barry Gilleran were a strong line in defence and grew as the game progressed. Peter Brady gave a man of the match performance linking very well with the forwards and driving into the danger area with penetrating runs. Dermot Brady and Darren Flaherty both played honest football contesting every ball. Midfield high fielding was dominated by Michael Brady who led the charge throughout the game. Peter Foy (2pts), Mark Diffley(1pt) and an in-form Conor Clarke (3pts) was the scoring line that created chances. Andrew Kelly, Martin Nevin (1pt) and Niall Kelly worked hard on the inside line linking play and making space. In the 2nd half Slashers sent in Tom Madden, Colin Smith, Stephen Philips, Sean and Rúaraí Clarke to freshen up the team. Slashers began to take control with points from Colin Smith (5pts), Mark Diffley and Martin Tarmey, eventually running out winners by the minimum - Slashers 1-13, Granard 15pts. Colm Farrell kept a clean sheet and made some very important saves in a crowded goalmouth. A most enjoyable sporting game played in excellent spirits by both teams. This was an ideal preparation for the championship game next week against Dromard. Slashers had to grind out a win on a night when some big names were on the side-line. The championship game is coming at a time when Slashers are finding form. "Ar aghaidh libh go dtí Páirc an Phíarsaigh....."
